(AP) - NAME: Muriel "Mickie" Siebert.

BORN: Sept. 12, 1932, in Cleveland.

DIED: Aug. 24, 2013, in New York.

EDUCATION: Attended Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University) 1949-1952.

FAMILY: Never married and did not have any children.

CAREER: 1954: arrives in New York at age 22, works at brokerage houses eventually becoming partner at several including Brimberg & Co.; 1967: Joined the New York Stock Exchange, founded Muriel Siebert & Co.; 1975: Converted her company to a discount brokerage after a new federal law abolished fixed commissions for brokers; 1977: Appointed by New York Gov. Hugh Carey to the state's superintendent of banking; 1982: Leaves banking superintendent job to run for the Republican nomination for Daniel Patrick Moynihan's U.S. Senate Seat. Loses in the primary and returns to running her company; 1996: Company goes public as Siebert Financial Corp.

HIGHLIGHTS:

_1990: Siebert established Siebert Entrepreneurial Philanthropic Plan, which donates to charity half of her company's net profits from new securities underwriting. Millions have been donated.

_1999: Siebert developed a personal finance program to improve the financial literacy of children. It was adopted by New York City high schools and is taught in other districts. Siebert worked to see the program established nationally.

_Siebert's New York office is located on the 17th floor of the red granite high-rise known as the Lipstick Building, called that because of its telescopic shape and red coloring that resembles a tube of lipstick. It is the same building occupied by Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities, which leased the 17th, 18th, and a portion of the 19th floors, until Madoff's $65 billion Ponzi scheme unraveled in 2008.
