CHARLIE DANIELS DIES
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The man who brought us the saga of a boy taking on — and defeating — the devil in a fiddle match has died. Charlie Daniels died today at a hospital in Tennessee. He was 83. His publicist says Daniels' doctors say he had a stroke. He's best known for his fiddle-heavy 1979 hit, “Devil Went Down to Georgia." The original lyrics had a victorious Johnny call the devil a “son of a bitch” after his showdown. But Daniels later toned it down to “son of a gun.” Among his career highlights were playing at the White House, at the Super Bowl — and playing often for U.S. troops in the Middle East.
KANYE WEST GETS FEDERAL BAILOUT LOAN
UNDATED (AP) — Among the companies that got loans from the federal government's pandemic rescue fund: Kanye West's clothing and sneaker brand Yeezy. The Treasury Department reports West got a loan worth between $2 million and $5 million — money that was to save 106 jobs. Yeezy is best known for sneakers that cost $250 a pair. The company just struck a deal that would see the rap star design gear to be sold in Gap stores. Over the weekend, West announced on Twitter he was running for president.
TONY AWARD-NOMINATED BROADWAY STAR NICK CORDERO DIES OF COVID-19
NEW YORK (AP) — It's true — most who get the new coronavirus have mild symptoms — or none at all. But that certainly wasn't the case for Broadway star Nick Cordero. Before he died yesterday in Los Angeles, he suffered a stunning series of medical complications from the disease. Cordero was taken to the ER March 30, and before the virus killed him, he suffered mini-strokes, blood clots, septic infections, needed a leg amputated, was put on a ventilator — and had a tracheostomy. His wife, Amanda Kloots describes her late husband as “everyone's friend” and “an incredible actor and musician.” Cordero was nominated for a Tony for his work in “Bullets Over Broadway." His other stage credits include “Waitress” and “A Bronx Tale.” Nick Cordero was 41.
ITALIAN COMPOSER ENNIO MORRICONE DIES, DID THEME FOR “GOOD, BAD, UGLY”
ROME (AP) — You know that coyote-howl-sounding theme you think of whenever you watch or think about one of those Spaghetti Western movies? The man responsible for that has died. His name: Ennio Morricone and the Oscar-winning Italian composer was 91. His attorney says Morricone died in a Rome hospital, where he had surgery to repair a leg bone he broke in a fall. Among the more than 400 movies he did music for are “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” "The Untouchables” and “Once Upon A Time In America.”
RELEASE DATE FOR BOOK BY PRESIDENT TRUMP'S NIECE MOVED UP
NEW YORK (AP) — Can't wait to hear what President Donald Trump's niece has to say about him in her tell-all book? You won't have to wait much longer. The book's publisher says it has bumped the release up by two weeks. It was originally set to drop July 28; it's now slated for release a week from tomorrow. The book got the green light last week after a New York state appeals court tossed a legal challenge by Trump's brother. There has been no immediate response to a request for comment from the White House on the new release date.
LOUVRE REOPENS
PARIS (AP) — Today there's a answer to the question — why is the “Mona Lisa” smiling. In this case, because the museum that houses the world's most famous portrait is open to the public again. The Louvre (LOOV') in Paris reopened today after a four-month lock-down because of the coronavirus pandemic. However, it isn't quite business as usual. Visitors must wear face masks, people who want to enter must make reservations — and the number of visitors inside is limited
