PAYSON — A man turned himself in to police on Thursday after police announced they were searching for a pickup truck in connection to a hit-and-run crash that left a 9-year-old boy injured.

The crash happened Wednesday about 4:41 p.m. near 100 E. 800 South in Payson, according to a news release from the Payson Police Department.

The boy was walking on the sidewalk when a Chevrolet pickup hit him, police said. He was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

The boy's mother posted early Thursday morning on Facebook that he was OK but hurting badly and had facial swelling. She expects him to be recovering for several weeks but said his injuries could have been much worse.

Jason Broadhead turned himself in to police on Thursday morning and told police drowsy driving contributed to the incident, according to Payson police. Broadhead said he closed his eyes while driving and woke up with his truck on the sidewalk near 800 S. Canyon Road, police said.

Broadhead told police he then drove home and didn’t know he had struck anyone until seeing the Facebook post by the police department on Thursday morning.

Police said Broadhead will face charges for leaving the scene of a crash with injuries.
