ESCALANTE, Garfield County — Authorities have identified a body that was discovered over the weekend in a remote area of Garfield County.
The body was identified as that of Stephen St. John, according to a Wednesday Facebook post from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office. His age was not given, but he was from the Salt Lake area, according to Garfield County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Denise Dastrup.
Authorities discovered the body Saturday near Egypt Road southeast of Escalante, according to the sheriff’s office. Garfield County Search and Rescue and the Rocky Mountain Search and Rescue dog team made the discovery.
St. John’s body was located under a cave-like rocky outcropping and appeared to have been there for a long time, according to Dastrup. No foul play is suspected in his death, she said.
St. John’s car was found nearby, according to the Wednesday post. The sheriff’s office is still waiting for toxicology reports to be released in the case.
There was some extremely cold weather recently in the area where the body was found, but there has also been some more mild weather, Dastrup said. She was not sure exactly what the weather conditions were like when the body was found.
