ST. GEORGE — A man accused of breaking into a St. George home at random in the middle of the night and assaulting the residents was charged Tuesday.
Ulises Josebeth Alegria, 27, of St. George. was charged in 5th District Court with aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony; aggravated assault, a second-degree felony; assault causing substantial bodily injury, a class A misdemeanor; two counts of criminal mischief, and failing to disclose his identity, both class B misdemeanors; and intoxication, a class C misdemeanor.
The new charges mark the third time in a month that Alegria has been charged with assaulting someone, according to court records.
On Saturday, about 1:10 a.m., St. George police say Alegria broke into a residence near 3400 South River Road by climbing through a woman’s bedroom window, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed in 5th District Court.
“When she tried to run out of the room, he repeatedly punched her in the head, causing a laceration above her left ear,” the affidavit states.
The woman’s husband then entered the room and got into a fight with Alegria. The husband was knocked to the ground and punched in the head several times, according to the affidavit, and may have lost consciousness.
Police noted in their affidavit that the husband is 51 and in “frail health” due to recent surgeries and his wife is 53, while Alegria is 5-foot-9, 220 pounds and “has a significant size and strength advantage” over both victims.
Detectives said Alegria “appears to have randomly entered their home and assaulted them,” according to the affidavit.
The husband was treated for injuries at a local hospital. Alegria was arrested with the assistance of a police K-9 in a nearby construction yard.
On Oct. 15, Alegria was charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony, after allegedly punching a co-worker and breaking his jaw, according to court documents. He was able to post bail in that case on Nov. 4.
He was also charged that same day with criminal mischief, assault and domestic violence for an incident with a woman he was in a relationship with, according to charging documents.
