OGDEN — A man who police say was wielding a knife is dead after being shot by four Ogden police officers Friday night.
About 8:55 p.m., a man with a knife approached a group of people who were at a yard party near 32nd Street and Gramercy Avenue, according to an emailed statement from Ogden Police Lt. Michael Boone.
The caller told authorities they were concerned for people’s safety since the man seemed disoriented, Boone said.
While officers were en route, the man with the knife started looking into cars and had gone into a carport near the area, according to Boone. Three Ogden police patrol cars with four officers drove into the area about 9 p.m., when witnesses flagged them down to show where the man was.
As officers approached the man, he showed the knife and “ignored repeated orders to drop the knife,” Boone said.
The man then started to advance toward officers in a threatening manner, with the knife in view, and continued to ignore police orders to drop the weapon, according to Boone. Eventually, the officers could no longer retreat, and all four officers fired their service pistols at the man, Boone said.
A medical team responded and declared the man dead on scene. His name was not immediately released.
The Weber County Critical Incident Response Team will be conducting an investigation into the incident, and the involved officers were placed on standard administrative leave, pending completion of the internal investigation.
Police said there was body camera footage of the incident, and it will be released in the future.
"It's unfortunate they had to do what they did. No officer wants to do that. The taking of a life is a serious thing," said Ogden Police Chief Randy Watts during an early morning press conference. "Unfortunately, they had to do it, and the results are what they are."
