KAMAS — Deputies identified a 74-year-old woman who died after a tree hit her head Tuesday.

Judith Pearce, of West Valley City, was using a chainsaw to cut down dead trees near her family's cabin in Manor Lands, Summit County, Sheriff Lt. Andrew Wright said. She cut a tree, and a dead tree that was leaning against it fell and hit her in the head, causing a fatal injury.

The leader of a Scout troop that had been helping Pearce and her husband clear away debris earlier in the day found the 74-year-old when she didn't show up for an appointment later that afternoon, Wright said.

Deputies arrived about 7 p.m. but believe the incident happened sometime between 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
