PAYSON — Authorities have identified a woman who died on Saturday after the car she was in hit a horse in the road on state Route 198.

Paula S. Bateman, 65, of Levan, died in the crash, according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Nick Street.

About 11 p.m. Saturday, Bateman was riding as a passenger in a southbound car, authorities said. A horse somehow got into the road, and the car crashed into the animal.

Bateman died from her injuries, according to a statement from UHP. The male driver of the car was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Bateman was a teacher in the Juab School District, according to a tweet from district Superintendent Rick L. Robins.

“Hearts are heavy in the Juab School District family with the loss of one of our greats Mrs. Paula Bateman,” he said Monday in the tweet. “Mrs. Bateman will be sorely missed by everyone in our school community.”
