MEXICAN HAT, San Juan County — An off-duty officer with the Navajo Police Department was arrested for investigation of DUI on Sunday, authorities said.

Police got several calls reporting a drunk driver on state Route 163 about 8:40 p.m. on Sunday, according to a Facebook post from the Navajo Police Department. The driver was parked in the middle of the road near Mexican Hat and then drove into an Exxon gas station, police said.

The driver eventually left the gas station and crashed into a ditch, police said.

Witnesses also reported that the driver was “visibly intoxicated, uncooperative, and attempting to leave the scene,” police said in the post.

The officer was not identified.

"The Navajo Police Department will take the necessary steps to hold our officers accountable for any misconduct that occurs while employed with this department," Navajo Police Chief Phillip Francisco said in the post.

The incident remains under investigation, according to police.
