LAKE POINT, Tooele County — Three people suffered "nonlife-threatening" injuries after a crash between a portable toilet company tanker truck and a commercial truck hauling gravel. The crash closed I-80 in Tooele County for several hours.
Emergency crews responded to a report of the crash near the Exit 99 ramp reconstruction project in Tooele County shortly after 9:15 a.m., said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Nick Street.
Street said a contractor for a portable toilet company was driving a tanker truck with a 5,000-gallon tank and servicing portable toilets at the construction area at the time.
At some point, the driver jetted across eastbound I-80 lanes and pulled out in front of a commercial truck hauling gravel. The gravel truck driver tried to avoid the tanker truck, but the two vehicles collided and the contents within the 5,000-gallon tanker spilled over the roadway, Street said.
The driver of the gravel truck was released at the scene. The driver of the tanker truck was taken to Mountain West Hospital in good condition.
A passenger in the tanker truck was flown to University Hospital in Salt Lake City in fair condition.
The crash closed eastbound I-80 at Exit 99 near Lakepoint for several hours while crews cleaned up contents from the tanker truck, gravel and fuel. It finally reopened around 4:30 p.m.
Drivers were diverted at the exit and rerouted back onto I-80 through the state Route 36 exit.
