ST. GEORGE — A man is in critical condition after he fell into a trench at a construction site and it collapsed on him on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident was first reported about 4:30 p.m. and took place near 3430 E. 2170 South, according to St. George Fire Department Chief Robert Stoker.

The man was working at the site of a major city public works project, Stoker said. Crews are installing new water and sewer lines and widening the road, he said.

All appropriate safety measures were in place at the site, including trench blocks, Stoker said. The workers had moved the blocks out of the trench and were preparing to move them to another area, he added.

At that point, either the ground gave way or the man tripped and fell, and he ended up down in the trench, Stoker said. A coworker tried to get him out with a ladder, but the side of the trench collapsed on the man before they could get him out, Stoker added. The man became pinned against a side of the trench, Stoker said.

The man, who is in his mid-20s, was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in critical condition, Stoker said. No further information about the man’s identity was immediately available.

The man is an employee of a local excavation company that is contracted with the City of St. George for the sewer project, Stoker said.
