WEST BOUNTIFUL — Troopers identified a man who died Monday night when he suffered a medical episode and the semitrailer he was driving drifted across a freeway on-ramp into a steel post.

Eugene Eldridge, 60, was driving the truck northbound on I-15 near 500 South in West Bountiful about 8 p.m. when the medical issue caused him to drift off the freeway into the dirt area between the freeway's fence and a movie theatre parking lot, said Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Nick Street on Tuesday.

The semitrailer never braked before colliding with the 400 North exit sign and a concrete barrier, Street said.

Emergency responders administered CPR when they arrived on the scene, but lost Eldridge's heartbeat. He was transported to Lakeview Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Street.

No one else was involved in the crash.
