HURRICANE, Washington County — A woman was killed in southern Utah in a head-on collision Saturday afternoon, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
A Ford F-250 hauling a trailer west on state Route 59 lost control and struck an eastbound Ford Fiesta at about 4:30 p.m., troopers said.
The Fiesta's driver, Melody Young of Colorado City, Arizona, was killed on impact.
Matteus De Gasperis of Hurricane was driving the truck, according to UHP. He was treated for a broken leg at Dixie Regional Medical Center and released.
Troopers believe the truck had a 17-year-old spare tire on the front left wheel and that came apart, causing the driver to lose control.
The crash happened about three miles south of Hurricane, according to the Utah Department of Transportation. One eastbound lane was closed following the crash.
