STRAWBERRY RESERVOIR, Wasatch County — Two men are in critical condition and a dog is dead after an early-morning crash near Strawberry Reservoir, officials said.
The crash took place about 12:47 a.m. Saturday near mile marker 45 on U.S. Highway 40, just north of Strawberry Reservoir, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Brady Zaugg said.
A Nissan pickup truck was heading west on the highway when it crossed the center median and collided head-on with a Subaru Outback, which was heading east, Zaugg said.
Two men were in the Nissan, and both had critical, life-threatening injuries, Zaugg said. They were both flown in a medical helicopter to a hospital.
A woman who was in the Subaru had serious injuries and was transported in a medical helicopter to the University Hospital in Salt Lake City, Zaugg said.
The woman’s dog was also in the car, and the dog died in the crash, he added.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated, but officials suspect drug or alcohol impairment may be a factor for the driver of the Nissan, Zaugg said. Highway 40 was closed in both directions for about three hours as officials cleaned up the crash scene, he said.
The names and ages of the people involved in the crash were not immediately released.
