TOOELE — UHP reopened I-80 eastbound near Tooele Wednesday morning after a truck carrying 75,000 pounds of broccoli crashed.

About 300 pounds of that broccoli scattered onto the freeway around 2:30 a.m., closing the road near the Salt Lake and Tooele county line. It took crews hours to clear the area.

UHP said the semitrailer carrying the broccoli veered to the side of the road and hit the cement barrier that holds up the highway overpass. The cement from the barrier ripped off the driver’s-side rear wall of the truck’s trailer.

Trooper Brandon Alsop said that caused another accident.

“The vehicle that was following the semi swerved and missed the debris that was being lost on the freeway. He ended up going off the right-hand side of the road and rolling over,” Alsop said.

The driver of the second vehicle was taken to University Hospital but was expected to be OK. The driver of the semi was not injured.

A representative from the Department of Agriculture is determining whether the remaining vegetables are still good.
