SALT LAKE CITY — Police released video surveillance Friday of a rare coin theft that occurred Aug. 1.
The theft occurred at the All About Coins store at 1123 E. 2100 South around 10 a.m., according to Salt Lake police detective Dennis McGowan. A man entered the store and asked to see several rare coin collections, McGowan said.
The owner took a tray of coins out of the glass case and placed them on the countertop. When the owner had momentarily turned away, the man took a coin from the tray and also reached behind the counter and took another coin from inside the case, McGowan said.
Police said one of the stolen coins was a 1908, no-motto St. Gaudens $20 gold piece. It was enclosed in a 2-inch-square sealed case and the coin was valued at $1,500. The other stolen coin was a 2013, 1-ounce gold buffalo coin. It was in a NGC MS-70 early release 50th anniversary commemorative label holder. The coin was also valued at $1,500.
Police described the man as clean shaven with brown hair, in his 30s. At the time of the robbery, he was wearing a white V-neck T-Shirt with shorts, black flip-flops and a black baseball cap with a red brim.
The owner of All About Coins is offering a cash reward for information leading to the arrest of the thief. Anyone with information can contact the Salt Lake City Police Department at 801-799-3000.
