SALT LAKE CITY — A man arrested by police Tuesday for allegedly riding a bicycle with a gun tucked in his waistband has been deported five times by immigration officials.
Now, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged a detainer against Juan Pena-Flores, 25, to take action against him again once his latest arrest and potential charges are adjudicated.
Just before 1 p.m., officers were flagged down by a man who said he saw a man with a gun riding a bicycle near 710 W. 800 South. Officers located the man, who had a .9mm Beretta in his waistband and a loaded magazine in his pocket, according to Salt Lake police.
U.S. Department of Homeland Security records indicate Pena-Flores has been deported to Mexico five times since 2008. His most recent deportation was in June 2013.
Court records show most recently, Pena-Flores was convicted in Arizona Federal Court for transporting marijuana over the Mexico border. U.S. Border Patrol agents seized about 141 pounds of marijuana from the group Pena-Flores was with. He was carrying a bundle weighing about 46 pounds, according to court records.
