SYRACUSE — A 15-year-old girl was sunbathing in a driveway when a family member backed a Chevy pickup truck out of the garage and ran her over Friday, police say.

The accident happened at about noon at a home near 3000 West and 2700 South. Syracuse police officer Erin Behm said the driver got in the truck before opening the garage door and didn't see the girl when backing out.

The girl was lying on the concrete and listening to her iPod with ear buds in her ears, Behm said. She could not hear the truck and was run over.

After realizing what happened, the driver called 911, Behm said. The girl was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.

"She had good vitals and was breathing when the paramedics put her in the helicopter," Behm said.

The girl, whose name wasn't released, remained in critical condition Saturday afternoon due to a head injury she suffered, Behm said.

Police did not release the name of the truck's driver Saturday, nor his or her relationship to the teen, due to the sensitivity of the situation. The driver was "really struggling," Behm said.

That driver will not face any charges related to the accident.

"It's just a tragic, tragic accident," Behm said.
