SALT LAKE CITY — The City Creek Macy’s store is asking for submissions from local artists to decorate its display windows for the Christmas season.

Macy’s media relations manager Kelley Tarzian said the tradition of decorating the windows during the holidays began the days of ZCMI and the City Creek Macy’s store continued it after public request after opening in the location.

“The community really asked for it,” Tarzian said. “There are so many cute stories of people saying, ‘Well, I went with my mom when I was a kid and I want to share that with my children.’ Seeing that we’ve done it for two years, the crowd last year was twice as big as the first year. It’s something that people are really catching back on to.”

Tarzian said the store is asking for submissions from local artists now until Aug. 31. The displays will be made entirely of candy, which Macy’s will supply, along with a 42-inch styrofoam ball, Tarzian said. The rotating ornament will hang 30 inches from the ground and will be covered with the candy in a holiday theme.

“Truly, what we are looking for is something that encompasses what the person views and feels the holidays is to them or the Salt Lake City community,” Tarzian said. “We have seen some really beautiful designs in the past that have been Salt Lake City-holiday inspired and others are just more of a general holiday theme.”

Artists are asked to submit a rendering of their proposed project that is feasible for the given time frame, budget and site specifics. The artist should also include a description of their artistic background and explain why they want to be involved with the project. The artists will be selected within a week of Aug. 31 and will be able to work on the display from then until installation on Oct. 30 to Nov. 20.

The candy ornament will be displayed in the South Main Street Macy’s window from Nov. 20 until Dec. 25. Artists can email their applications to Macy’s City Creek visual manager Chad Young at Chad.young@macys.com.
