VERNAL — A California man drove nearly 800 miles to meet a 12-year-old girl for sex, according to Vernal police.
The "girl" was actually an undercover detective assigned to the Utah Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, according to Assistant Vernal Police Chief Keith Campbell.
Cameron Call, 34, made contact with the Vernal police detective over the Internet in April, believing he was talking with a 12-year-old girl, Campbell said.
"Over the course of several months, Call had many communications of a sexually explicit nature with the undercover officer," the assistant chief said. "These communications included sending sexually explicit material over the Internet and arranging to meet the 12-year-old in Vernal for sexual activity."
Call, who is from Loomis, California, was arrested at gunpoint Monday during a traffic stop on U.S. 40 just west of Vernal. Officers decided not to let him reach the prearranged meeting place "for public safety reasons," Campbell said.
Officers booked Call into the Uintah County Jail for investigation of enticing a minor over the Internet and distribution of pornography. An 8th District judge has ordered that he be held without bail.
