SANDY — Crews tackled a fast-moving grass fire in a gully bordered by homes Tuesday before it could reach nearby residences.

Sandy Deputy Fire Chief Derek Maxfield said the fire burned about 3 acres but didn't threaten homes close to the Dimple Dell Gully, near 1100 East and Sego Lily Drive. Crews from multiple agencies responded to help.

"With something like this, as dry as it is and ripe and ready to burn, and with the neighboring homes, we wanted to get on it really quickly," Maxfield said.

Reports of large field fire came in just before 7 p.m., Maxfield said. The cause remains under investigation, though crews believe sparks from some exposed wiring on breakers may have contributed.

This is second fire in the Gully within about a week, Maxfield said. The previous blaze was likely human caused, he said.

"We're trying to be as proactive as we can," Maxfield said. "During the Fourth of July and the 24th (of July) holiday, we've staffed extra crews. We know this is a target area for us."

Maxfield said leading up the Pioneer Day holiday next week he wants to remind residents that fireworks are prohibited in some areas of Sandy, including the Dimple Dell Gully. A full list of fireworks regulations and an interactive fireworks map are available on the city's website.
