DUCHESNE COUNTY — A Roosevelt man was enjoying his usual commute home when he witnessed a large flash flood Monday evening.

Shayne Lamb said he was driving home from working at EnerVest Operating in Nine Mile Canyon when he saw the flash flood. He said he had just crossed through a dip in the road specifically created for flash floods when he saw the water coming fast.

“There was a little bit of a trickle, and I happened to look to the right and saw boulders and sticks rolling down the wash,” Lamb said. “(My co-worker) was trapped (on the other side of the wash) for about an hour while we watched it.”

Lamb said he decided to video the incident when he saw logs and four-feet- wide boulders being carried by the flash flood. He said the water was around four feet deep while running over the paved road, and it widened the wash while flowing through it.

Lamb said that while he had never been so close to a flash flood, they are fairly common in the Uintah Basin during the summer months.

“We usually see three or four a year,” he said. “Usually during this time of year when thunderstorms just pop up out of nowhere.”

The Salt Lake City National Weather Service put a flash flood warning into effect Tuesday at 4 p.m. for Duchesne and Carbon county. The NWS reported heavy rain over Nine Mile Canyon and Argyle Canyon. The warning will be in effect until 6:45 p.m.
