DELTA — A Nephi man officiating at a demolition derby was killed in an accident at the Delta event Friday night, according to the Millard County Sheriff's Office.
One of the cars in the derby was hit by another and went over a dirt berm wall where it struck Robert Steele, 50, who situated himself behind the berm to more closely see the arena during one of the derby heats, police said.
Several people from the stands jumped the fence immediately to assist the ambulance crews that were on standby at the derby, and Steele was transported to the Delta Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to police.
The Millard County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
Multiple drivers who won money at the event said they were donating it to Steele's family.
