SOUTH SALT LAKE — A man that police believe slashed nearly three dozen tires in an RV lot was stunned with a Taser and arrested early Sunday.

Just before 2 a.m., a man was witnessed by a passerby allegedly vandalising vehicles in the lot at Legacy RV, 3711 S. State, and called police.

"Officers roll up, and when they get out of their car they can hear the sound of the air leaking out of the tires," said South Salt Lake police detective Gary Keller.

When officers approached the man, he ran off, Keller said. The officers were able to track him down, but the man refused to comply their orders, he said. The officers were forced to use a Taser to bring the man under control and place him under arrest, Keller said.

After officers took the man, who "smelled strongly of alcohol," into custody, they discovered he had illegally taken a sign from another nearby business, Keller said.

One RV window was broken and between 34 to 36 tires were slashed, Keller said. Damage was estimated to be in the thousands of dollars.

Kenneth Benson, 29, was arrested for investigation of criminal mischief in excess of $5,000, theft, failing to stop at the command of a law enforcer, interfering with an arrest, public intoxication and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Benson was found guilty of assault in a domestic violence case in February and sentenced to five days in jail. He is currently appealing that case, according to court records.
