CEDAR CITY — The Bureau of Land Management brought eight wild horses into Cedar City Monday as part of the first roundup of the animals.

Last week, local ranchers filed suit, asking the BLM to immediately round up more wild horses, which they say are overpopulating private property.

Iron County threatened to sue in April and the BLM agreed to take action.

Iron County Commissioner Dave Miller told the St. George Spectrum the first roundup is a drop in the bucket.

"But it's better than what we've seen in the past. We have a long way to go," he said.

He estimated there could be 2,000 extra wild horses on the range, and said eight isn’t enough to help.

The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign issued a statement Tuesday accusing the BLM of “caving to pressure” from ranchers in rounding up wild horses.
