SALT LAKE CITY — It’s a beautiful week to visit Utah’s southern deserts. From Kanab to Moab, from the shores of Lake Powell to baseball diamonds of Richfield, the spring wildflowers are blooming.

Last week while driving our Jeep to Alstrom Point which overlooks Lake Powell’s Padre Bay, my wife and I saw prince’s plumes gathered on the hilltops as if having a picnic, shy mariposa lilies swimming in vast seas of evening primrose, and showy globemallows crowding the sides of the dirt road like spectators cheering on racers at the Tour de France.

All throughout Zion, Canyonlands, Arches, Capital Reef and the Grand Staircase-Escalante, desert explorers will be met by orange globemallows, yellow goldeneyes, and brilliant pink-flowered hedgehogs, to name just a few of the dozens of varieties of flowers blooming right now in southern Utah.
