LOGAN — Emergency crews responded to a small chemical spill at a cheese plant in Logan Monday morning.

Schreiber Foods plant, located near 600 West and 800 North, received a leaking container of hydrogen peroxide on Sunday. Employees transferred the leaking chemical to another container.

The container had too much pressure and exploded around 8:30 Monday morning, spraying 250 gallons of hydrogen peroxide throughout the room, according to Craig Humphreys of the Logan Fire Department.

The company's own hazmat crew responded, and Logan police and fire crews provided backup for them.

"There were no injuries," Humphreys said. "There was no threat to the surrounding community or residential homes."

Hydrogen peroxide can cause respiratory distress. Employees were evacuated and sprayed down by the hazmat team, and then were allowed back in the building.

The explosion happened in the part of the plant that makes cream cheese, but Humprheys said it was in a completely separate room and didn't contaminate any food products.
