CEDAR CITY — A man was arrested after living under the radar in Cedar City for 20 years as an unregistered sex offender.

Incarcerated in California for sex offense, Gary Albritton moved to Utah and failed to register with Utah.

Residents of the area found a phone and some personal effects near Cornstock Rd. and turned it into a Cedar City Patrol Deputy. According to Cedar City Sheriff Mark Gower, the deputy found questionable information on the phone and actively sought out the owner.

"The phone had some disturbing things on it," Gower said.

The phone contained a photo of the owner, as well as information about the owner’s former workplace. The deputy took the phone to the former employer who was able to identify the owner as Albritton. He had been having mail sent to a business, keeping his residential address hidden while living in Cedar City.

A member of the staff in the Sheriff’s department who registers sex offenders started to dig around and discovered Albritton was non-compliant. He was arrested at his home.

Albritton was charged with failure to register as a sex offender, and has some local warrants for minor traffic citations.

Gower does not know the details of Albritton's previous contact with law enforcement.

"We don't know this guy's activity. Obviously he flew under the radar for that many years," Gower said. "There's always a chance there's a victim there that could come forward now."

He said anyone with information concerning Albritton and any possible victims should contact the Iron County Sheriff’s Office at 435-867-7500.
