TAYLORSVILLE — A good Samaritan who tried to help two drivers involved in an accident was critically injured Tuesday after being hit by another vehicle.

Two cars were involved in a minor accident about 7:40 a.m. near 5225 S. Redwood Road. Anthony Rodriguez, 35, who lives nearby, started to call 911 and walked into the street to assist the motorists, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.

"He's going out to call for help in that crash, ends up in the middle of Redwood Road and gets struck by a southbound vehicle," Hoyal said.

It was not immediately known Tuesday whether Rodriguez was still on the phone with a police dispatcher when he was hit.

Rodriquez was taken to a local hospital in critical condition but was later downgraded to extremely critical condition, according to Hoyal.

The 21-year-old male driver who hit the man had a green light but apparently did not see the pedestrian, according to investigators.
