HEBER CITY — A crash between two semitrailer trucks Wednesday morning on U.S. 40 in Wasatch County left one man with critical injuries, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. when the driver of an eastbound truck pulling an empty flatbed trailer crossed into the oncoming lane about 4 miles west of the summit in Daniels Canyon, UHP Sgt. Todd Royce said.

The truck was still in the wrong lane when it collided with a westbound truck pulling a box trailer loaded with general freight, the sergeant said.

"He hit him just about where the sleeper (compartment) is," Royce said, "so it wasn't head-on. It was more like a sideswipe."

The driver of the truck with the box trailer had to be extricated from his cab. He was taken to Heber Valley Medical Center with critical injuries, Royce said. He was later flown to a hospital on the Wasatch Front for further treatment.

The man's injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, Royce said. He did not know whether the other driver was injured.

Heavy snow was falling in Daniels Canyon when the crash happened, leading troopers to suspect weather may have been a contributing factor, according to Royce. The driver pulling the flatbed trailer was cited for failure to operate in a single lane, the sergeant said.
