AMERICAN FORK — A violent shooting that played out on a busy Orem street last fall may be closer to being settled in court.
Mason French and Travis Waldron appeared in court Tuesday. Both are charged with killing Rupert Miley on 800 North in Orem while Miley was driving down the road.
The shooting caused Miley to lose control and crash, which caused damage for several blocks.
Paramedics discovered Miley wasn't critically hurt from the wreck, but that he had been shot and that the shot went through the back seat of the car.
Police allege the incident was the result of a dispute over a drug debt that led to Miley's death.
Prosecutors acknowledged Tuesday the defendants are considering taking a plea deal.
“We feel good about the case, but at the same time there are mitigating factors and things we are taking into consideration as we contemplate a just resolution of this case,” prosecutor Randy Kennard said.
Both defendants will be back in court in two weeks. If they don't take the deal, prosecutors say they will set the case for trial.
