MAGNA — A man was booked into jail on attempted murder charges after he tried to take the law into his own hands, according to police.

Just before midnight Saturday, Gerald Stanton, 44, called police and said he had shot a man at 8911 West 3100 South in Magna, said Lt. Justin Hoyal of the Unified Police Department.

According to Hoyal, Stanton believed that his partner had been sexually assaulted, so he went searching for and located the person he "believed was the suspect."

A verbal argument ensued that ultimately led to a physical altercation. During the altercation, Stanton shot the victim in the "stomach area" then contacted police, Hoyal said.

The victim was transported to Intermountain Medical Center and is now in critical but stable condition.

Investigators followed up on the alleged sexual assault claim and found that no sexual assault had taken place.

Stanton was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on attempted homicide charges, Hoyal said.
