BRIGHAM CITY — A group of cats that was growing exponentially inside a Brigham City apartment is now under control.

Officials from the Utah Animal Adoption Center say 40 cats were taken from the apartment on Friday, and have since been cleaned, checked and sent to foster homes or shelters.

The Standard-Examiner reports the problem started when two brothers adopted a pregnant cat a few months ago, then brought in four more.

Lindsay Ortega of the adoption center says the owners weren't trying to breed cats, but they didn't get them spayed or neutered and the population exploded.

She says many of the cats were skinny and undernourished.

Adoption center officials say they've received numerous offers to help after word about the cats got out.
