SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake County District Attorney has ruled an officer-involved shooting in July was justified.
The D.A.'s report said a UHP trooper pulled over Kody Sturgeon in the early morning hours of July 14 for a traffic violation on I-15.
UHP said Sturgeon provided false information to the trooper. A passenger then exited the suspect's vehicle and Sturgeon drove away.
Officers found his abandoned car a short time later and discovered Sturgeon hiding in a shed. They said he pointed a gun at officers, fled on foot, and turned to point the weapon at pursuing officers several times during the foot chase.
In response, a trooper fired a total of seven rounds at Sturgeon, hitting him in the hand and the leg and finally stopping him.
Sturgeon was treated at a hospital then booked into jail.
During the investigation, officers found Sturgeon was actually using an air gun.
The D.A. said Sturgeon had violated terms of parole.
