SALT LAKE CITY — Police foiled a Utah man's attempt recently to send $99,000 in cash hidden in a microwave oven to a drug dealer in Arizona.

A confidential informant told a Unified police detective that a man intended to ship a Jeep Cherokee from a North Salt Lake vehicle sales and shipping company on Sept. 3. The detective found the Jeep in the parking lot and saw a dog kennel, a tire and new microwave in the box inside, according to a complaint filed in federal court.

When the detective questioned the driver, the man told him he was sending the oven to his mother. The detective received permission to unbox the microwave. He noticed the screws on its outer shell were tampered with. He removed the casing and found $99,000 in cash, according to the complaint.

When asked what the cash was for, the man replied, "It is money owed for drugs and extra money for a new supply."
