WEST VALLEY CITY — A man died after crashing his car through a fence and into a canal Tuesday, police said.
The 1990 model Nissan Sentra was found upside down in waist-deep water, a neighbor said. Investigators said they haven't determined the cause of the crash, which occurred at about 11:30 a.m. at 2800 S. 6400 West in West Valley City.
"The vehicle did flip over, it rolled over upside down into the canal," said Sgt. Jason Hauer of the West Valley Police Department.
The man remained underwater for an unknown amount of time before rescue crews could cut him free from his vehicle, Hauer said.
One witness said police tried to revive the man for at least 20 minutes, but they were unsuccessful.
A second witness said the man was driving erratically on 6400 West and was smiling and bobbing his head prior to the crash. She said the man was swerving on the road while he drove behind her. He then sped up and crashed through the fence. She said it didn't seem like the driver was in any kind of trouble.
The man was later identified as Antonio Quintanilla, 32. A woman who identified herself as Quintanilla's wife came to the crash site Tuesday afternoon. She was crying as she said that she and her husband live in the neighborhood. She said she had no idea what could have caused her husband to crash.
Quintanilla is the father of three children who are 3, 6 and 9 years old.
The investigation for the cause of the crash is ongoing.
