KAYSVILLE — A school in Davis County is offering tutoring -- not for students but for parents who want to help their children learn to read and write.

Endeavour Elementary School Principal Beth Johnston said she's heard the same question over and over again from parents: "How can I help my child at home besides just reading with them?"

Johnston said teachers and administrators brainstormed and came up with an idea to have the parents become the students for one day.

"We decided that we would turn them into partners this year and teach them some of the valuable things my teachers know. Then they could model it in their home," Johnston said.

The teachers will take 30 minutes to tutor the parents on how to help the kids with big words. Johnston said for the kids that excel, parents will be given writing strategies. After the tutoring session, parents will get time to practice with their students in class.

Johnston admitted they are afraid that parents who already work with their students will be the only ones to show up for the Friday morning sessions in Kaysville. But she said they had to start somewhere.

"Once we get the feeling that it's a worthwhile thing to do," Johnston said, "we will try to expand it."

She said they could hold more tutoring sessions for parents in the summer or in the evening, but they want to see if it is successful first. They are also planning a math tutoring session later in the school year.

Johnston knows that a morning tutoring session will not work for all parents. But she said the children will not be alone during that time period. She said they will work with a buddy. And the parents who can't attend will be able to see what was taught that day by going to the school's website.
