THE AFTERLIFE — The first day of fall is past and calendars will flip to October soon; it’s time to break out the pumpkin spice and decide whose Halloween party you’ll attend.
For parents of young kids, it’s also the time to start planning Halloween costumes, picking out pumpkins and taking part of the seasonal activities Utah hosts.
For Young Children (10 and Under)
Cornbelly’s Corn Maze
Each year, Cornbelly’s grows a 12-acre corn maze into a different design. This year, the farm nodded to the intense BYU and U. of U. football rivalry in the state.
The maze, among other activities for children, can be modified to suit your family’s interests. For small children, an easy 5-minute maze makes sure no little ones get lost and your family will get out before the tantrums begin. On the Grain Train, kids can encounter a scarecrow and jack-o'-lantern vignette in the maze.

Kids can spend an entire day taking in the fall weather at historic Wheeler Farm. Sort through a pumpkin patch, make your way through a hay maze and take a wagon ride during your day at the farm.

As an alternative to the ever-busy Gardner Village, for little ones who want to practice wearing their costume before their big night of trick-or-treating, This is The Place Heritage Park is hosting Halloween-themed activities. Kids can sit down for a tall tale by the Story Witch, take a pony ride or make some Halloween-themed crafts to take home. Plus, they can sneak in an early round of trick-or-treating in the pioneer village.

Kids can get an education about poisonous, carnivorous and other dangerous plants while they solve a whodunnit guided by a Red Butte employee. They can come in their costumes for the evening of mystery solving and craft-making.

Haunted Salt Lake City Tours
History is suddenly fun and a little spooky on a Haunted Tour of Utah’s capital city. Take a walking tour or hop on a tour bus for the hour-and-a-half tour, guided by a professional storyteller.
Every weekend night, walking tours start at the Matheson Courthouse on Main Street, make their way up to the Thomas Kearns Building, Off Broadway Theater, Hotel Monaco and Lamb’s Cafe.
Every Saturday at 5 p.m., visitors who want an extra spooky experience can take a tour of the Salt Lake City Cemetery in the Avenues.
Choose between two bus tours, each of which start behind the Rio Grande Station. One heads to the Capitol Building and another explores the history of the Fort Douglas Museum.
Tours are also offered in Ogden.

Frightmares at Lagoon
A longtime tradition in Utah, Lagoon’s Frightmares offers something appropriately spooky for every age, though older kids will have a few more options. Kids can participate in a quick, fun straw maze, or take things up a notch with the funhouse of fear or a zombie-themed haunt.
Eat at a Halloween-themed dinner and take advantage of a photo opportunity with some of Lagoon’s frightful characters. Included in the cost of dinner is a fast pass for Frightmares activities.
