NEW YORK CITY — A Syracuse woman traveled to New York City in hopes of sitting in the money chair on the new NBC show Million Second Quiz Tuesday.
Being brought to New York City during the anniversary of Sept. 11 has special meaning for Terry Dutcher — her son was killed in Iraq in 2007.
"After 9/11, I mean it was just like he had a plan: he knew he was going to go, he was going to join, he volunteered for Iraq," Dutcher said. "He volunteered to go and serve in this war. He even said on his MySpace page ‘I volunteered to come here. Nobody forced me to come here. This is what I wanted to do.' "
When she found out she was going to be in New York City for the anniversary of 9/11, Dutcher said she ran home to grab a Utah Faces of Valor coin with her son's name on it before going to the airport. Dutcher said she couldn't go without a piece of her son with her.
She said Sept. 11 represents the fact that her son and so many others sacrificed their lives.
Dutcher arrived in New York City at 5:37 a.m. EST Tuesday after taking a late night flight from Utah. She was brought directly to an interview with Al Roker on the Today Show at the set of the Million Second Quiz. Roker mistakenly thought Dutcher's husband, Jeff, was her father while they talked on the set.
Million Second Quiz premiered on Sept. 9 and is a new game show that allows viewers to compete for a chance to go on the show by playing from home on their phones and computers.
"After the Olympics we wanted to come up with a game show that felt like a big live event," said show creator and producer Stephen Lambert.
Like the Olympics, the show will last for two weeks.
Dutcher made into the money chair Tuesday and was in the lead but just missed it in the end.
"He hit me with a doubler in the end and I just got a little frazzled. But it's great. It's fun," Dutched said.
Dutcher said she won just by being on the show.
"I would have loved to have gone on, but I'm grateful for the moment I had," she said.
