WEST JORDAN — A bystander at an apartment swimming pool noticed an empty floatation device and jumped in the water Wednesday to rescue a 4-year-old from drowning.

The boy was swimming with his mother and an older sister about 3:45 p.m. in the outdoor pool at the Willow Cove Apartments, 9300 S. Redwood Road, police said.

A bystander who noticed a vacant floatation device saw the boy at the bottom of the pool and jumped into the water to retrieve him, West Jordan Police Lt. Richard Bell said.

Other bystanders performed CPR on the boy after he was pulled from the water, Bell said. The boy was breathing and conscious by the time medical personnel began treating him, he said.

The boy was flown to Primary Children's Medical Center.
