HINCKLEY SCOUT RANCH, Summit County — A medical helicopter responded to Hinckley Scout Ranch Thursday after wind blew a tree onto a teenage Scout.
The 14-year-old boy was walking along a road when a gust of wind came up, blowing a tree onto the Scout, Great Salt Lake Council Scout executive Rick Barnes said. The boy was one of 1,500 Scouts and leaders attending the Varsity Big Event this week at the camp, formerly called the East Fork of the Bear, which is located about 30 miles south of Evanston, Wyo.
Barnes said there were other Scouts in the area at the time who were not struck by the tree and called for help. Two paramedics and doctors responded and called for a medical helicopter.
Barnes said the boy has a broken arm, possible broken leg and other injuries, none of which are life-threatening. The Summit County Sheriff's Office, however, indicated that the boy sustained chest injuries in the accident.
A second Scout was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Evanston Thursday with injuries sustained in an unrelated incident, according to Barnes. The teen was participating in an event when he fell and broke his wrist.
The parents of the injured boys were contacted after the incidents.
