SALT LAKE CITY — A three-hour standoff ended in the arrest of a man accused of breaking into a Salt Lake City apartment and threatening the couple inside.

Police locked down a west side neighborhood Wednesday night after a man broke into a four-plex at 390 Navajo Street around 9 p.m. According to police, he told the man and woman inside that he had a gun.

The victims were able to exit the house unharmed, and the man was trapped in the home after police officers and SWAT teams responded to the scene.

After a three-hour standoff, officers used localized tear gas then entered the home and arrested the suspect, Jerry Romero, late Wednesday night.

No one was hurt.

Officers said Romero has an extensive criminal record, and they had been searching for him for several months.
