SALT LAKE CITY — Marvel fans have been feeling mostly positive about their first glimpse of the next Thor adventure, “Thor: The Dark World.”

An import part of what Marvel and Disney are calling “phase two,” “Dark World” is taking the adventure — along with Natalie Portman’s character, Jane Foster — back to Asgard to fight a relentless force of dark elves and their vengeful leader, Malekith.

“Thor was my favorite of the phase one standalone films,” one commenter said, “and I'm really excited to see this one in November. Glad to see a bit of Loki in there, too. It will be interesting to see their relationship progress after the events of 'Avengers.' ”

One of the most noticeable shifts in the new trailer is the darker tone, which has been something fans have been predicting since news that “Game of Thrones” director Alan Taylor agreed to lead the project. Shots of large-scale destruction flash across both Earth and Asgard, while individual characters try to confront their dire and rapidly declining surroundings.

“You must be truly desperate to come to me for help,” a prisoned and haggled-looking Loki says toward the end of the trailer.

“You should know that when you betray me,” Thor replies, “I will kill you.”

Along with trailers for “Iron Man 3,” Marvel has made it clear that phase two will push Earth’s mightiest heroes to a new level of personal torment, which will hopefully tie into a series of individual scores waiting to be settled when they meet up again in “Avengers 2,” set for 2015.

“Thor: The Dark World” is rated PG-13 and is set to be released Nov. 8, 2013 — starring Portman, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins and Tom Hiddleston.
