SALT LAKE CITY — A man used an unusual means to get the attention of neighbors early Wednesday morning after becoming trapped in a vehicle by a rollover — his gun.

At about 1:30 am, police were notified that someone had crashed into a ditch and that shots had been fired. When they arrived at the accident near 1700 W. Cole Ln (6650 S.), they found a silver pickup truck turned on its side in the ditch. A man was pinned inside, according to West Jordan police officer Troy Leary.

The man had been there for some time, but none of his phones were working, Leary said. He then decided to use his nearby handgun to shoot through the windshield and into the ground in order to attract the attention of neighbors.

Leary said this apparently worked, as they soon received a call about the shots and the rollover.

Officers later cited the driver for a DUI, but charges are pending results of a blood alcohol test.

Police don't suspect any foul play in the incident, though the matter is still under investigation.

The man received minor cuts and bruises and was transported to a local hospital for treatment, according to Leary.
