PROVO — After months of searching through closets, offices, nooks, and crannies, Timpview High School's athletic director is turning to the community to help him locate 75 missing trophies.

Athletic Director Al Polland has headed the effort to raise nearly $13,000 to build and install trophy cases in the Thunderdome. He has spent countless hours over the last year repairing and polishing the trophies he has found throughout the school to put in one single place — something he says the school hasn't had in the past.

"We just had way, way too much Timpview athletic history that should be displayed for people that come to our basketball games or come to our school that was just sitting in closets," Polland said.

Timpview's recent history has been rocked by financial and player eligibility investigations, but Polland hopes this will help the school move on.

"We're just trying to do something that should have been done years and years and years ago that can show off the really rich history of Timpview Athletics."

Using yearbooks and newspapers, he has verified that about 300 state and region athletic trophies have been awarded to the school. He has filled a room with more than 200 trophies, but is missing 75 — including five first-place and two second-place state trophies and 68 region trophies.

Timpview High is looking for:
  • 75 missing trophies
  • Jerseys
  • State championship balls
  • Bags
  • Letterman jackets
  • Photographs of teams, games, and players
  • Information about first team all-state athletes or coaches of the year
  • State championship rosters
  • Other awards
  • He believes many of these have left the school throughout the years and may be in people's homes.

"I would really like to try and get those trophies that are sitting out there on people's shelves in the community, to give those back to the school," Polland said. "We now have a place for those and we would love to have those back and displayed. If you would help us, we'd be glad to take them back."

Others, he thinks, may have been lost or broken. He estimates 30 to 40 percent of the trophies he has accumulated needed some kind of repair.

In addition to the hundreds of trophies that will be displayed, the school hopes to display other athletic memorabilia like jerseys, letterman jackets, and eventually, photos of key players, to make a timeline of Timpview's athletic history.

"One gentleman who played on our ‘87 basketball team that went 25-0 in the state championship, he had a souvenir ball that all the boys and the coaches had signed that he donated that's going to be displayed," Polland said. "We have a game ball from our first state football championship."

The cases will be installed over the high school's spring break next week, and Polland will begin placing the trophies and memorabilia the week after. He hopes that once people see the history of Timpview on the walls of the gym, they will continue to look for the missing trophies, completing the collection.

"I'm just hoping for the boys and the girls who come back to their high school who played on these championship teams that we have these trophies and display them."

Timpview asks that anyone who may have a trophy return it to the school by April 8.
