TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — Tens of thousands of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Honduras celebrated the dedication of their country's first temple Sunday.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in the Church's First Presidency, led the dedicatory services for the Tegucigalpa temple. The services were broadcast to all Church units in Honduras and Nicaragua.

President Uchtdorf sealed the cornerstone during the first of three services, then invited several children to help add a little mortar. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles was also in attendance, along with his wife, Pat.

A cultural celebration — which took ten months to conceive — was held Saturday evening, featuring 4,100 of the faith's youth. They performed a collection of ancestral songs and dances featuring different cultures of their country.

Some 15,000 Saints filled the Tegucigalpa stadium for the program. President Uchtdorf spoke to those in attendance, calling the celebration a "memorable occasion."

"You stand independent. You are free to choose," he said. "Tonight you choose to give a wonderful presentation to Honduras. The moment of this weekend will be ingrained in your hearts."

This temple is the Church's 141st in the world and the 6th in Central America. Prior to its construction, Latter-day Saints had to travel 12 hours to the nearest temple in Guatemala City.
