SALT LAKE CITY — A man who made more than 100 calls to 911 in one night threatening officers was arrested Thursday.

On the night of March 6, the graveyard shift officer at the Salt Lake City Police Department began receiving phone calls from Mohamud Ismail, 27. According to police, Ismail was making threats to officers, saying he wanted to harm them.

Over the course of the graveyard shift and part way into the morning shift, Ismail made more than 100 threatening telephone calls to SLCPD, tying up the emergency line, according to police.

"For public safety as well, we needed to stop him from calling," said Salt Lake City Police Department Detective Veronica Montoya.

Officers were able to confirm the location of the man, who was making the calls from his apartment. Salt Lake police served a search warrant to the apartment, where they found Ismail.

They arrested the man on suspicion of threats against life or property, emergency telephone abuse and obstruction of justice.

"We need to make sure we're using 911 for emergencies and that people can't get through if we have people calling and pranking our dispatchers," Montoya said. "For our community's sake we need to keep those lines open."

Montoya said this is not the first time the man has abused emergency phone lines.

According to court documents, Ismail's criminal history includes criminal mischief and attempted robbery.
