MURRAY — Two gang members wanted by police have been booked into jail because officers happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Members of the Metro Gang Unit were looking for a fugitive when they stumbled upon the two others. KSL was there when officers arrested John and David Gines at the Studio 6 Motel near 6600 S. 975 East in Murray around 2 a.m. Friday.

Police were at the motel looking for another fugitive. They spotted a car associated with the man they were looking for and set up surveillance on it. Then detectives noticed two men exit the motel and recognized them as brothers who they said are white supremacist gang members belonging to the Soldiers of Aryan Culture.

The brothers had a history with the Metro Gang Unit, so the focus of the investigation at the motel quickly shifted to them.

Bad luck for them that they happened to be at the same motel as another wanted fugitive. Good for us, bad for them.

–Sgt. Paul Barker

"They're known to our unit. As soon as they were spotted it was, ‘There they are. They have warrants. They're hitting a car. Let's get them,' " Sgt. Paul Barker said.

"I think they were shocked. I think they knew they were wanted but didn't have a clue until it was too late and we were on top of them," Barker added.

John Gines was taken into custody for burglary, possession of stolen property, and failure to stop for police. His younger brother David was arrested for several outstanding warrants. Both had warrants for drug and property crimes.

Detectives said the brothers were in a room at the motel partying with friends when they were arrested. Officer said they recovered drugs from the scene.

Police are questioning the friends but so far have made no other arrests. The Gines brothers were taken to the Salt Lake County Jail.
