SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah announced Monday it would not renew the contract of head swim coach Greg Winslow in the midst of allegations of sexual abuse by Winslow when he worked as a swim coach in Arizona.

The school had previously suspended Winslow pending further investigation after accusations came to light that Winslow had sexually abused a 15-year-old girl while employed with the Sun Devils Aquatic Club in Tempe, Ariz.

No charges have been filed in the case, but a 97-page police report details the accusations against Winslow, which Arizona State University, where the abuse allegedly took place, felt were serious enough to recommend two charges of sexual abuse.

The report alleges Winslow kissed and fondled a 15-year-old girl beginning in 2005. The alleged victim, now 22, decided to go to the police after a failed suicide attempt last year, according to the report.

In a phone conversation recorded Nov. 18, 2012, Winslow apologizes to the alleged victim for kissing and fondling her. In a Dec. 16 interview with police, he denied doing more than kissing her on her swim cap, though, saying he had apologized for more so "she could get better."

University of Utah athletics director Chris Hill announced Monday the school had decided it is "in the best interest of our current student-athletes, future recruits and the general well being of our swimming and diving program" not to renew Winslow's contract. He said Winslow will remain on paid administrative leave until further notice.

"Our swimming and diving program is an important part of our athletic department and we are invested in its future," he said. "We will begin a search for a new coach immediately."

Hill appointed Richard Marschner, a third-year Utah diving coach, as the interim swimming and diving coach. The Utah men's team is currently competing in Washington at the Pac-12 Championships. The Utah women's team finished in seventh place at the championships last week.
