WEST JORDAN — A West Jordan neighborhood was shaken up after a police officer's home caught fire Monday afternoon.
Around 3 p.m., neighbors along New Heritage Circle, roughly 3600 West and 9300 South, heard some sort of explosion coming from the officer's house. Caleb Head said he could feel the heat from his house, so he ran out to get his neighbors away from the fire.
"(The smoke) was black — like, thick black — you couldn't even see through the smoke if you wanted to," Head said.
West Jordan Fire Battalion Chief Steve Holmes said there may be about $50,000 to $100,000 in damage to the home.
The garage was fully involved, with some extension going up into what looks like a mother-in-law apartment above the house," Holmes said, adding that the fire also spread into the kitchen.
No one was home at the time, and there were no injuries reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
